Reincarnation Case with Change of Nationality & Religion: Muslim Iranian to British Christian

Though Peter’s specific past life identity could not be found, these past life memories, which were verified, support the validity of this reincarnation case. In addition, it involves a significant change in religion and nationality. Peter Avery appears to have had a past lifetime as a Muslim in Iran. In contemporary times, he was born in England and was presumably a Christian.

Geographic Memory in Reincarnation Cases: A Form of Deja Vu

Geographic memory can be considered a form of déjà vu, where an individual has the feeling that they have been at physical location before, though the individual in fact has never been to that location in their contemporary lifetime.

Some instances of déjà vu may be due to a past lifetime in which time was spent in the geographic area that stimulated the feelings of déjà vu. Ian Stevenson has pointed out that déjà vu is very common and some surveys show that over 60 percent of people have experienced déjà vu. (1)

Navy Officer Peter Avery Trains in Arabic Languages

After the war, he attended the University of London, where he graduated in 1949 with a degree in Arabic and Persian languages.

With these skills, Peter took a job as the Training Manager for Arabic and Persian languages for the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. He was stationed in the city of Abadan in the southwest region of Iran. For the first six months of his assignment, he was confined to Abadan and the surrounding oil fields.

In the winter of 1949-1950, a manager from the company’s London office, Mr. John Evans, was planning to tour facilities in Iran and he needed an interpreter to travel with him. Peter was assigned to escort Mr. Evans on a trip to Isfahan, in central Iran.

Peter was delighted to be given his assignment, as he would finally get to see more of Iran. As noted, Peter had never been out of the area surrounding Abadan.

Past Life Memories of the Streets of Isfahan

In Isfahan, over breakfast, Peter described to Mr. Evans, in detail, the route that they would take from their hotel to the city’s bazaar and to Maidan-I Shah, a public square that was part of a palace complex built by Shah Abbas I between the years 1590 to 1595.

Mr. Evans was surprised by Peter’s extensive knowledge of the streets of Isfahan, as Peter had never been there before. Peter admitted that he seemed to know the way naturally. Peter had not consulted guidebooks or maps to determine the way to the bazaar and Maidan-I Shah; he just seemed to know the way.

As they embarked on their walk through the city, Peter’s proposed route was entirely accurate. This is reminiscent of the case of Anne Frank | Barbro Karlen, as Barbro, at ten years of age, was able to lead her parents from their hotel on a 10 minute walk through the winding streets of Amsterdam directly to the Anne Frank House, even though she had never been to Amsterdam before. Similarly, Peter had led Mr. Evans through the streets of Isfahan to the bazaar and Maidan-I Shah.

A Past Life Flood of Emotions at Madrasa Mader-e Shah

A blue domed mosque sits in the garden of the complex. As soon as Peter and Mr. Evans walked into the courtyard of Madrasa Mader-e Shah, Peter experienced a flood of emotions. Let us let Peter himself narrate the turn of events:

“I burst into uncontrollable sobbing under an overwhelming impression that I had somehow come home. I sat on the parapet of a pond. Mr. Evans very tactfully walked away. He said afterwards that this seemed the best he could do, until I could dry my eyes and rejoin him. Little passed between us about the episode which, in front of one of my employers, embarrassed me, although he showed no sign of disapprobation and seemed quietly understanding. Thus culminated a morning throughout which I had all the time felt a strange familiarity with a city I had never visited before, and the geography of which I had no former conscious knowledge.” (2)

This flood of emotions is similar to what occurred in the case of John B. Gordon | Jeff Keene, when Jeff was intuitively led to a spot called Sunken Road, which is a section of the American Civil War battlefield named Antietam. At Sunken Road, without knowing why, Jeff also started to cry uncontrollably. He felt grief and rage at the same time. Later, he learned that he had almost been killed in the Civil War at that very spot at Sunken Road, in his past lifetime as John B. Gordon.

Past Life Memories: Innate Knowledge of the Original Architecture of Shalimar Bagh

It was in 1944, when he was serving in the Royal Indian Navy during World War II. Peter were 21 years of age at the time. An Indian officer on his ship had befriended him and invited Peter to visit his family, who lived in Lahore, which is now part of Pakistan.

The friend knew of Peter’s great interest in Islamic literature and culture and he wanted Peter to meet his father, Khan Bahadur Muhammad Shafi, who was a principle of a school for Asian studies and a scholar of Islamic history.

In Lahore, they visited the Shalimar Bagh, a garden complex which was built by the Islamic Mughal emperors. Peter was accompanied by his friend’s father, the scholar Bahadur Muhammad Shafi. Peter had never been to Shalimar Bagh before, nor had he read about its layout.

Past Life Memory: Peter Identifies the Original Door at Shalimar Bagh

He told Shafi that the original doorway was in the wall opposite them, on the other side of the enclosure. Mr. Shafi told Peter that he was indeed correct.

Later, Peter commented that the pavilion, or small building, in the center of the garden was not part of the original design. Mr. Shafi also confirmed Peter’s statement, noting that the pavilion was originally part of an emperor’s tomb complex and that it was moved to Shalimar Burg by Ranjit Singh, a Sikh who ruled Lahore from 1799 to 1839.

As such, Peter’s proposed past lifetime, in which he became familiar with Shalimar Burg, must have occurred before 1799, prior to the pavilion’s move from the tomb complex to Shalimar Burg.

Reincarnation & Déjà vu Experience in the Shalimar Bagh, Lahore

Peter wrote about his experience at Shalimar Burg:

Peter’s experience at Shalimar Burg also is reminiscent of what happened in the Anne Frank | Barbro Karlen reincarnation case. Recall that Barbro she led her parents to the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam at the age of ten, though she had never been to Amsterdam before. On approaching the Frank house, Barbro noted that the entrance had been changed, which was true. She also knew that photographs that Anne Frank had clipped out of magazines of movie stars should have been on a particular wall. These photos had been taken down to be mounted behind protective glass, so they were not present when Barbro and her parents visited the Frank house. A tour guide, though, confirmed that Barbro was correct regarding where the photos normally would be found.

Just as Barbro knew details of the structure and interior of the Anne Frank house from a past incarnation, it appears that Peter knew of the original design of Shalimar Burg, apparently from a past lifetime or lifetimes in Iran and Pakistan.

Past Life Passion: Peter Becomes a Cambridge Lecturer in Persian Studies

After that, he continued as a Fellow of King’s College, Cambridge, where he became established as a famous scholar of Persian studies. Peter is most well known for his translations of Persian poets Hafiz and Omar Khayyam. In addition, he wrote extensively on the history of Iran, from its earliest origins to contemporary times.

Where did Peter’s passion for Persia and Islamic studies come from, given that he was born in England, which is predominantly a Christian nation?

It appears that his love for Persia, Iran and Islamic studies stems from a past lifetime or lifetimes in Iran and Pakistan, given his innate knowledge of the original design of Shalimar Burg, in Lahore, Pakistan, his innate knowledge of the streets of Isfahan, in Iran, as well as the flood of emotions that he experienced in Madrasa Mader-e Shah, in Isfahan, Iran.

Peter Avery died on October 6, 2008 in England.

Principles of Reincarnation & Understanding Past Lives

Peter Avery did not remember any names from his proposed past life experience in Iran and Pakistan and as such, he was not able to identify who he may specifically have been in the past. As such, this case could not be historically validated. Still, his déjà vu experiences and innate knowledge of geographical locations that he had not previously visited in his contemporary incarnation are consistent with past life memories.

This demonstrates the following features:

Past Life Geographic Memory: Peter had detailed knowledge of the streets of Isfahan, Iran and knew of the original design of Shalimar Burg, in Lahore, Pakistan (pictured to the right), though he had never been to these places in his contemporary lifetime. Peter stated that he also did not gain this information through maps or books.

In addition, he experienced a flood of emotions Madrasa Mader-e Shah, which is located in Isfahan, Iran (pictured below and to the right), including the overwhelming feeling that he had come home.

It is likely that these experiences stemmed from a past life or lifetimes in which he had spent time in these geographic locations in Iran and Pakistan. The distance between the cities where he experienced geographic memory, between Isfahan and Lahore, is approximately 1000 miles or 1600 kilometers. Based on when the pavilion was moved to Shalimar Burg, Peter’s past lifetime, when he visited this garden complex, must have been before 1799.

It is unclear whether travel between Isfahan and Lahore in the seventeenth century was common. If it was, then Peter’s experiences could have occurred in one prior incarnation. If travel between these cities did not occur in that era, then Peter likely had two prior incarnations, one lifetime in the area of Isfahan, Iran, and another in the area of Lahore, Pakistan.

Past Life Innate Interest and Talent: Peter became a fluent in Persian and later became a world recognized scholar in Persian and Islamic studies. It is likely that his talent for the Persian language and his love of Persian and Islamic literature, history and culture stem from a past lifetime or lifetimes as a Muslim in Iran.

Reincarnation & Change of Nationality and Religion: Though Peter Avery’s religion is not specifically identified in Ian Stevenson’s case report, it is likely that Peter was raised in a Christian family, given his last name and birth in England, a predominantly Christian country.

If Peter did have a past lifetime or lifetimes in Iran and Pakistan, and if his passion for Islamic culture stems from a Muslim past incarnation, then this case demonstrates a significant change in nationality and religion from one lifetime to another.

As we observe events such as the destruction of he World Trade Center in New York and the ongoing conflicts between the Taliban, Al-Qaeda and Judeo-Christian cultures, this case can teach us a valuable lesson.

This reincarnation case demonstrates that we can be Islamic in one lifetime and Christian in another, as well as Iranian or Pakistani in one incarnation and British in a subsequent lifetime. These realizations should make us see ourselves as universal souls that are not limited to one religion or nationality. This realization can help create a more peaceful world.

David Llewelyn has a Secret Jewish Father but is Raised Christian

reincarnationpastliferesearchchesterDavid Llewelyn was born in Chester, England, on September 1, 1970. His mother, Susan Llewelyn, was Welsh. At the time that David was born, she was married to Jeffery Llewelyn, but David’s biologic father was Solomon Rosenberg, a Jewish man who Susan had an affair with for a period of two years.

Susan hid the affair with Solomon from her husband, Jeffery. As such, David was raised as the son of Susan and Jeffery. The couple stayed together at least to the time that David was nine years of age and as such, David was raised in a Christian culture. Susan and Jeffery Llewelyn eventually divorced.

Susan noted that Solomon Rosenberg saw David a few times, but he never took interest in or responsibility for David. Growing up, David was not aware that Solomon was his biologic father.

Susan contacted Ian Stevenson, MD about her son’s reincarnation case after she heard him on a BBC television program on reincarnation in 1982. Following a period of correspondence, Stevenson traveled to Chester, England to meet with David and Susan.

Past Life Memories: Deep Pits or Holes with Bodies

Past Life Memories of a Gas Chamber

At home, the family cooked on an electric stove. When they visited an aunt who cooked with gas, David said, it “was like the smell in my room at night, it’s going to smother me.” (1) The Nazis had used gases, such as carbon monoxide or hydrogen sulfide, to kill concentration camp victims.

David also had past life images arise in his mind during waking hours. These images included people who were prisoners of war who lived in wood huts. David thought these people were Jewish.

Past Life Memories: David Recalls Being Placed into a Pit

When Ian Stevenson interviewed him, David said that he had past life memories in which he was being put into a pit as a young boy. He remembered looking up to the top of the pit where he saw another boy looking at him. He thought the boy was a companion who might save him. There were other bodies in the pit. (2) This image recurred many times and David told Stevenson that he remembered the terrible odor of the camp.

Stevenson noted that in Nazi concentration camps, children 14 years of age and younger were killed, as they were deemed unfit for work. Stevenson noted that at the concentration camp of Treblinka, “children were thrown into a ditch, sometimes still alive, where they are consumed by fire. Alternately, they could be thrown into a ‘regular mass grave.’” (3)

Past Life Ability & Knowledge of Jewish Customs: Writing from Left to Right, Kosher Food and Kippahs

No one had taught him to do so, rather, he was taught to read and write in the usual English manner, from left to right. Though teachers would correct him, he continued to have this Hebrew habit of writing from right to left until he was 11 years old.

David, as a child, surprised his mother by asking whether food she was serving had blood in it, an apparent reference to Kosher processing of meat. No one had told David about Kosher customs. When he and his parents went to another city when he was nine, David looked at a building that looked like a church. He told his parents, “They wear caps there. Jeffery, Susan’s husband, then noted that the building was a Jewish synagogue. David was referring to Kippahs that Jewish people wear.

Past Life Phobias of the Star of David, the Color Yellow, Camps & German People

When he was 12 years old, Susan took David into a shop where he saw a necklace with a Star of David attached to it. David then started to cry and ran out into the street. Susan ran after him and asked what disturbed him. David said that the necklace with the Star of David was “beckoning to him.” (3)

David also had a strong aversion to the color yellow. Susan stated that David “hated” yellow. The Nazi’s made Jews wear yellow stars on their clothing, so that they could be distinguished from gentiles. David also had a strong fear of camps. When Susan told him that people have very pleasant vacations at camps, David replied:

“No. There is no happiness there. People are caged in and cold, hungry, and frightened. They’ll never get out.” (4) David said that the people in camps were like skeletons, they were bald and they had no food. David would say in despair, “I’m worried for the other people. Why did it happen? Why did it have to happen?” (5)

When David was older, she noticed that when David saw Germans on television, he became fearful and angry. Similarly, he displayed fear and anger when he saw German people on a vacation trip that he took with his mother to the island of Corfu.

Summary & Past Life Case Analysis

David’s past lifetime in a concentration camp could not be validated historically, as he did not remember his name or give other specific details from which could allow verification.

The strength of this case rests on David having innate knowledge of Jewish customs, such as reading and writing from right to left, and memories of scenes characteristic of Nazi concentration camps. David’s mother, Susan, strongly denied that David could have learned this information by normal means.

Regarding whether David somehow acquired this knowledge from Solomon Rosenberg, his biologic father, through some type of genetic memory, Dr. Stevenson commented:

“Even the most ardent geneticist would not suggest that genes would transmit the habit of reading and writing from right to left, concern about whether food has blood in it, and images of a concentration camp.” (6)

Principles of Reincarnation & Understanding Past Lives

This reincarnation case demonstrates the following features:

Past Life Talent & Knowledge: When he began to read and write in the English language, he did so from right to left, which is the technique used for the Hebrew. Though teachers tried to correct this practice, David persisted in this practice until he was 11 years of age. He seemed to have innate knowledge of Kosher food and Kippahs.

Past Life Phobias: David had fears of the Star of David, the color yellow, vacation camps and of German people.

Change of Religion and Ethic Affiliation: In his past lifetime, David died as a young Jewish boy in a Nazi concentration camp. In contemporary times, David reincarnated into a Christian family. Though David’s biologic father, Solomon, was Jewish, David as a boy was not aware of this paternal relationship since Susan, his mother, kept her affair with Solomon secret.

A dramatic and very compelling reincarnation case of this type is the Anne Frank | Barbro Karlen reincarnation case, as Anne too was persecuted as a Jew in a Nazi concentration camp, yet she reincarnated as Barbro Karlen to a Christian family in Sweden. If the Nazis and German people knew that one could be born Jewish in one lifetime and Christian in another, the Holocaust could never have happened. In this way, evidence of reincarnation can help create a more peaceful world.

A Christian Boy’s Short Life in Sri Lanka

Palitha Senewiratne was born in 1952 and lived in Nittambuwa, a town 22 miles or 35 kilometers northeast of Colombo. Colombo is the capital of Sri Lanka with a population of about 650,000 people. Sri Lanka is an island country off the west coast of India. (1)

Palitha’s father was named Lionel and his mother Vinnis. Palitha was very close to his mother, who enjoyed sewing. He had a more distant relationship with his father. One activity that Palitha and his father did enjoy doing together was planting in the garden. Palitha had a brother named Nimal, who was 4 years younger than Palitha. The two boys fought frequently and once Nimal even bit Palitha. Despite this animosity, when a dog bit Nimal, Palitha was so angry at the canine that he wanted to kill it. Palitha also had a brother named Ranjith. (2)

Uncle Charlie has Electricity and Car; Palitha’s Toy Elephant

Charles Senewiratne was the great uncle of Lionel Senewirante, Palitha’s father, who lived next door to Palitha’s family. Charles was financially successful and enjoyed many luxuries for the time including electricity in his home and the possession of an automobile. Charles’s son had a motorcycle. (3)

Palitha was fascinated by elephants, which are found in Sri Lanka. Ian Stevenson pointed out that elephants have to live by rivers or streams, as they need to bath themselves. Palitha had a toy elephant, which he would bath in a well on the family’s property. (4)

Palitha Attends a Christian School and has a Death Premonition

The Senewiratne family was Christian and Palitha went to a Christian elementary school, which was part of St. Mary’s College. Though Buddhism has been the predominant religion in Sri Lanka for over 2000 years, the Portuguese, Dutch and English colonized the island country and with their rule, they brought Christianity to the Sri Lanka. Currently, about 7 percent of country’s population is Christian, 70 percent are Buddhists, 13 percent are Hindu and 10 percent Muslim.

St. Mary’s College is located in a town called Veyangoda, which is 4.3 miles or 7 kilometers from Nittambuwe. During the school year, Palitha stayed in a boarding house near the school. In July 1960, Palitha came home from school on vacation. Though he had no known medical problems, he seemed irritable and unwell. Though his usual practice was to place his schoolbag, which contained books and his toy elephant, in a cupboard or cabinet, this time he abandoned the schoolbag on a chair and stated: ” I shall not be going to school again.” (5)

Ian Stevenson noted that with this statement, Palitha seemed to have a premonition that he would die soon. This phenomenon was also observed in the Reincarnation Case of Hanan Monsour | Suzanne Ghanem. (6)

After returning from school, Palitha soon developed a serious illness marked by vomiting. He was taken to the hospital and passed away within just a few days of the beginning of his illness. Palitha died on July 28, 1960, at eight years of age. (7)

Palitha is Reincarnated into a Buddhist Family as Gamini Jayasena

A little over two years after Pakutha died, Gamini Jayasena was born in a section of Colombo named Nugegoda on November 13, 1962. His father was G. Jayasena and his mother’s name was P. K. Nadawathie. He was the first child of family and was called “baby.” This nickname stuck and the family continued to use “baby” to refer to Gamini. (8)

When he was about 18 months old, he started talking about a previous life. Gamini stated that he had another mother whom he considered his ”real mother.” Gamini said that his past life mother was much bigger than his present mother. This was true as P.K. Nadawathie was a small woman, in contrast to Palitha’s mother. (9)

When he saw his mother using a sewing machine, Gamini said, “There is machine like that at our house.” As mentioned, Vinnis, Palitha’s mother, did have a sewing machine. (10)

Gamini said that there was someone named Nimal, who Gamini said had bitten him. Gamini also stated that Nimal had been bitten by a dog, which was true. Ian Stevenson said that Nimal himself confirmed this event to him and even showed Stevenson the scar from the dog bite. Gamini also said that Nimal was gored by a cow, which later was confirmed when the family met Vinnis, the mother of Palitha and Nimal. (11)

Gamini said that in his past lifetime, he had a schoolbag that was still on the chair at his past life home. In this bag, he said, he kept books and a toy elephant, which he would bath in a well. Ian Stevenson noted that Gamini often made statements as if he was still living the life of Palitha. (12)

Past Life Memories: Gamini Knows about Electric Lights, Switches and Olive Trees, Even though None Exist at his Parent’s Home

The Jayasena family was relatively poor and their modest home did not have electricity. As such, the family was surprised when Gamini, as a toddler, indicated to his parents that electric light could be turned on by a switch, a phenomenon he had never observed or been taught. In addition to the luxury of electricity, Gamini said that his clothes were better at his past life home. (13)

Gamini stated that at his prior home, there was a “Charlie Uncle” who had an automobile and that Charlie Uncle’s family had a red motorcycle, which was true regarding Charles Senewiratne, the great uncle of Palitha’s father. Gamini said that Charlie Uncle would drive him to school in the car. Recall the Charles Senewirtne’s home had electricity. As such, Gamini’s knowledge about electric lights and light switches represents a past life memory. (14)

Gamini also said that at his prior home, his father would break branches from an olive tree and give the branches to him. Gamini’a mother was surprised to hear Gamini use the term “olive,” as the family never used this word as there were no olive trees in the vicinity of their house. (15)

According to his father, Gamini was always talking of his previous home between 2 and 3 years of age. He noted that when Gamini got angry, he wanted to retreat to his prior home. This behavior, of threatening to return to a past life home when upset, was also observed in Reincarnation Cases of Burmese Twins. (16)

Past Life Behaviors: Gamini Prays like a Christian, Covets a Cross and Celebrates Christmas

The Jayasena family, who were Buddhists, was quite surprised to observe Gamini praying in the posture typical of a Christian, kneeling with body erect. This is in contrast to how Buddhists and the Jayasena famly prayed, kneeling but with the buttocks on the heels in a sitting position. (17)

When Gamini found a wooden cross he brought it home and asked his mother to hang it on the wall. The family also noticed that Gamini resisted going to Buddhist temples and he would not bow to Buddhist monks, which was considered rude behavior for a Buddhist child. (18)

Another unusual behavior for a Buddhist is that Gamini liked to celebrate Christmas. He would talk about Santa Claus an expected to receive gifts at Christmas time. (19)

Due to these behaviors, the Jayasena family suspected Gamini had a past lifetime as a Christian.

Gamini recognizes his Past Life Village and finds his Past Life Home

In April 1965, when he was two and a half years of age, his family took a bus trip and when they came to the town of Nittambuwa, Gamini said this was the location of his previous home. (20)

The family was close to Baddegama Wimalawansa, who was a cousin of Gamini’s mother, a Buddhist monk and a well known principal of a school in Colombo. The Jayasena family shared Gamini’s statements regarding an apparent past lifetime with the Venerable (the way Buddhist monks are addressed) Wimalawansa, who decided to research the case. (21)

On May 2, 1965, Ven. Wimalawansa took Gamini, along with his mother, to Nittambuwa in an attempt to research the possible past lifetime that Gamini was referring to. As the car neared the town, they drove past a narrow street or lane. Gamini pointed at the lane and the car was halted. Gamini walked back to the lane and stated, “This is the way to my house.” He then walked down the lane and approached a house, which nobody in the party had been to before. Gamini then said, “That is my house.” He also stated, “My ‘mummy’ lives there.” This indeed was the home of the Senewiratne family and the place where Palitha had lived. (22)

Xenoglossy: Gamini uses Past Life Terms in Referring to his Past Life Parents

Gamini then went up to the gate of the house and said, “Daddy is not there.” The group was surprised to hear Gamini use the words “mummy” and “daddy,” as these terms were not used in their family. Instead they used the Sri Lankan terms for father, “tatha,” and “amma” for mother.

The terms “daddy” and “mummy” were used in Sri Lanka by Christian colonists from England and Gamini’s knowledge of these terms represent past life recollections from Palitha’s schooling at St. Mary’s College. Indeed, Gamini’s parents had never even heard the terms “daddy” and “mummy” until Gamini started using them spontaneously. (23)

Past Life Memories: Gamini finds Charlie Uncle’s Farm

Gamini made a second recognition while on the lane. When walking down the lane towards the Senewiratne family’s home, Gamini found another small road that branched from the lane. Gamini made a left turn onto this small road and walked down it to a farm. He then returned and stated, “Charlie Uncle is not there.” The home of Charles Senewiratne, the great uncle of Lionel Senewirante, Palitha’s father, was indeed at the end of this small road. Ian Stevenson speculated that Gamini surmised that Charles was not home as his automobile was not parked in front of the house. (24)

Christianity & Reincarnation: Christians in Sri Lanka are Especially Closed Minded

At this time, the group did not attempt to introduce themselves to the occupants of the house that Gamini identified as his past life home. Ven. Wimalawansa was reluctant to introduce themselves to the residents of the house as it was assumed that the past life family were Christians, and they did not know how a Christian family would react to being told that their deceased family member, Palitha, had reincarnated as Gamini, who belonged to a Buddhist family. (25)

Ian Stevenson noted that Christians in Sri Lanka were especially resistant to the idea of reincarnation, in contrast to Christians in other countries who are more open, which he attributed to the Sri Lankan Christians being a minority in a country of Buddhists and Hindus who believe in reincarnation. (26)

Past Life Attachments: Gamini’s Family Decides Not to Contact Occupants of Gamini’s Past Life Home, which makes Gamini Weep

In addition, there was some confusion as to whether Gamini had been referring to having had a toy elephant or a real elephant in the past incarnation. Since the property that Gamini indicated was his past life home was not situated by a body of water, which is needed for live elephants, Ven. Wimalawansa was unsure whether this was the correct past life location. Due to this and the Christian issue, Ven. Wimalawansa thought it would be better to first make inquiries about the family living in the house that Gamini indicated was his past life home, rather than just barging in. As such, the party returned to Colombo. (27)

Gamini was very distraught that he was not allowed to go into his past life home and he cried continuously for 10 days after the visit. He kept saying that he wanted to go to his previous mother’s house and kept asking for the school bag that he left at the house. In an attempt to appease him, Gamini’s parents bought him a new school bag, but Gamini said he that did not want the new one, rather, he wanted the one he had before. (28)

Reincarnation Case Investigation: The Senewiratne Family Seeks Out the Reincarnation of Palitha

Unknown to them, villagers of Nittambuwa recognized the Buddhist monk and school principal, Ven. Wimalawansa, and related to other villagers that this distinguished party was researching a reincarnation case and that they were interested in the family living in the house at the end of the lane that Gamini had brought them to. These villagers told the occupants of this house, the Senewiratne family, of the Buddhist monk and his party’s interest in their home. (29)

Subsequently, Lionel and Vinnis Senewiratne traveled to Colombo and called on Ven. Wimalawansa at the school where he was the principal. They explained that their son, Palitha, had died a few years before. They asked to see Gamini, but were told they could not do so at that time. They gave a photo of Palitha to Ven. Wimalawansa, who forwarded the image to the Jayasena family. When Gamini saw the photo of Palitha, he said, “That’s my baby.” Since he was called “baby” by the family, they assumed that Gamini was referring to himself. (30)

Gamini is Brought to his Past Life Home & Family and Recognizes his Past Life Mother & Siblings

On May 2, 1965, when he was less than 3 years old, Gamini was brought back to Nittambuwa by Ven. Wimalawansa and taken to the house that Gamini said was his past life home. The Senewiratne family and a large crowd of neighbors gathered in front of the house. Ven. Wimalawansa suggested that Gamini give a gift of sweets, which was brought by the party, to his past life mother. Though Ian Stevenson noted that Gamini may have received clues from glances that neighbors may have made, Gamimi did place the sweets at the feet of Vinnis Senewiratne, Palitha’s mother. (31)

Vinnis then asked Gamini to identify Palitha’s brothers, Nimal and Ranjith, out of the crowd. Gamini correctly pointed them out. (32)

Past Life Memories: Gamini Notes Changes in his Past Life Home and Finds the Toy Elephant Bathing Well and the Olive Tree He Climbed

Gamini then observed that the roof of the Senewiratne home was not “shiny” before. Indeed, when Palitha was alive, a thatched roof covered the house. After he died, a corrugated iron roof was installed, which made it shiny. (33)

Gamini also found the well in which he, as Palitha, bathed his toy elephant. He did so by crossing a weeded area on the property. Vinnis explained that when Palitha was alive, a path led to the well, but after his death, the path was abandoned. Gamini also pointed to rice paddy fields in the town and said, “Those paddy fields are ours.” These fields did indeed belong to the Senewiratne family. (34)

When in the Senewirtne home, Ven. Wimalawansa showed a photo of Palitha to Gamini and inquired, “Do you know how this is?” Gamini replied, “It is myself.” (35)

While inside the Senewiratne home, Gamini stated, “There used to be an olive tree.” When asked to point it out, Gamini, went out on his and walked behind the house, where he found the olive tree. He said that he used to climb this tree. Palitha did indeed climb this olive tree. Recall that Gamini had previously told his parents that his past life father had broken off olive branches and given them to him, and that Gamini’s parents were surprised that he used the word olive, as they never used the term as there were no olive trees in the area that they lived in. (36)

Past Life Memories: At St. Mary’s College, Gamini finds his Past Life School Bench, Church Pew & Boarding Home & Identifies his Favorite Past Life Sweet

After visiting Nittambuwa on May 2, 1965, Gamimi was taken to St Mary’s College, where Palitha went to school. Once there, Gamini spontaneously found the classroom where Palitha was taught and ran to a bench and sat on it. Palitha’s teacher verified that this was the very bench that Palitha sat on. In the church at the school, Gamini recognized the pew that he used to sit on during his lifetime as Palitha. (37)

When taken near the boarding house where Palitha lived during the school year, Gamini found the boarding house unaided and when he found that the front door was locked, he ran around to the back of the house. Not finding anyone, he ran back to their group and stated, “Sister is not there.” This statement may mean that Gamini was expecting to find a Christian nun. Ian Stevenson was impressed at Gamini’s bold eagerness to enter a house that he had never been to in his current lifetime. Recall that Gamini was less than 3 years old at this time. (38)

At the boarding house, as at the Senewiratne home, Gamini stated that there used to be an olive tree on the property. Later, it was learned that this was true and that the olive tree had been cut down after Palitha’s death. (39)

On the way back from the boarding house to the group’s car, Gamini also recognized a candy shop where Palitha had bought sweets. At this shop, Gamini identified Palitha’s favorite sweet, a chocolate called sinibola, out of 5 different chocolate bars on display. Vinnis, Palitha’s mother, confirmed that this was Palitha’s favorite sweet. (40)

Reincarnation & Behavioral Similarities between Palitha and Gamini

Ian Stevenson reported that many similarities in personality and behavior existed between Palitha and Gamini. Both Palitha and Gamini were fascinated with elephants, liked to plant in the garden, liked poultry curry but disliked beef and both were very active, energetic boys. There were also similarities in dress. Most boys in Sri Lanka wore their shirts outside of their pants, but Palitha and Gamini preferred to tuck their shirts inside their pants. Ian Stevenson noted that at St. Mary’s College, boys were expected to have their shirts tucked in, which likely is the place where Palitha and Gamini acquired this habit. (41)

In addition, Gamini’s reactions to Senewiratne family members were consistent with how Palitha felt about these individuals. For example, Palitha was very close to his mother, but distant to his father. Similarly, when Gamini was taken to the Senewiratne home, Gamini was affectionate to Vinnis and appeared to be very happy to be with her. In contrast, Gamini cried when Palitha’s father tried to take his hand and resisted efforts to be brought closer to him. Ian Stevenson also noted that Gamini was aloof with Nimal. Gamini explained that he was still mad at Nimal for biting him. (42)

Christians Accept Reincarnation: Palitha’s Christian Relatives & Schoolteachers believe that Gamini is the Reincarnation of Palitha

Ian Stevenson considered this one of the most extensively researched reincarnation cases, in terms of interview hours, of all the cases he had studied. He also reported that the Senewiratne and Jayasena families had no prior acquaintance or mutual friends. (43)

Though they were Christians, both Palitha’s father and Charles Senewiratne (Charlie Uncle) came to believe that Gamini is the reincarnation of Palitha. Palitha’s father stated:

“As Christians we are not supposed to believe this nonsense, but he [Gamini] has recognized all of us and I think he is definitely our son reborn.” (44)

Reincarnation as the Work of the Devil: A Challenge to Religious Doctrine

Two teachers at St. Mary’s College were also convinced of the validity of the case, but were afraid to say so openly for fear of being censured by a priest at St. Mary’s who said, regarding this reincarnation case, “It was the work of the devil.” (45)

Another case in which Christian beliefs were challenged by evidence of reincarnation involves James Leininger, a young boy who had spontaneous nightmares and memories of being a US World War II fighter pilot whose plane was shot down. When Chastised, Gamini Threatened to Retreat to his Past Life Home

Visits between the families persisted at least through 1975, oftentimes initiated by Gamini. He appeared happy when with the Senewiratne family at Nittambuwa and became angry when taken away. If he was scolded or chastised at home, Gamini continued to threaten that he would go back to his past life home in Nittambuwa. Angelina Lopes is Hit by a Car After a Day at the Beach

Angelina was a very affectionate and unusually generous. She had a habit of referring to her mother, Erma, as “Dear Mother.” (1) This was in contrast to Erma’s other two daughters, who did not use this phrase.

On July 9, 1960, when Angelina was 7 years old, Erma took her and her two sisters to a beach on a river, near their home. On the way home, they were crossing a road and a car struck Angelina and killed her.

Soul Plan: Angelina will Be Reincarnated as a Boy

Francisco told Erma that Angelina would be reborn to her in 2 years. As a devout Roman Catholic, Erma was confused about Francisco’s prediction, as reincarnation was not part of her faith.

Francisco continued to reassure Erma. He told her to be prepared for Angelina’s return, though she may be a boy in her next incarnation.

Erma became pregnant at the end of 1961. In her seventh month of pregnancy, Erma had a dream in which Angelina communicated to her, indicating that her baby would be a boy.

Alfonso’s Past Life Memories of Events from the Lifetime of Angelina

Alfonso was born on August 23, 1962 in Loures, a little over two years after Angelina’s death. Within a few months of Alfonso’s birth, in 1963, the Lopes family moved to Lisbon, Portugal.

As soon as he could speak, Alfonso made statements which indicated that he was the reincarnation of Angelina. Erma, his mother, vowed that Alfonso had not learned this information about Angelina’s life by normal means. These statements include:

1. At 1½ years of age, Alfonso referred to Erma as “Dear Mother,” which was the phrase that Angelina used for Erma. Recall that Erma’s other daughters did not use this term.

2. Also when Alfonso was 1½, he was watching a television program in which a truck was going down a street with a child running across the street. Alfonso shut his eyes and started shouting, “No, no, no,” an apparent reaction to Angelina’s death by being struck by a car.

3. When Alfonso was 4 years old, neighbors the Lopes family had in Loures came to visit them in Lisbon. These visiting neighbors included a boy named Hernani, who Angelina used to play with. Spontaneously, Alfonso asked Hernani:

Erma noted that Ana was the nick name of a servant who worked for both the Lopes family and the Hernani family in Loures. Ana’s full name was Anihas, just as Alfonso had said. Angelina was very fond of Anihas. In spontaneously stating Ana’s full name, Alfonso was having a past life memory from his lifetime as Angelina.

4. When Alfonso was almost 6, before he started going to school, he came into the family’s kitchen where Erma was cooking. Alfonso noticed a red checked napkin. Alfonso then said:

“Look, Mama, the napkin I used to take to school with my snack. I will take it again when I go back to school, won’t I?” (5)

Indeed, Erma would make snacks for Angelina and wrap them in a red checked napkin, which Angelina would take to school. As such, Alfonso again remembered events in the lifetime of Angelina.

Reincarnation & Gender Change: Alfonso tells his Teachers that He is a Girl

5. A few months after Alfonso started school, his teacher requested a meeting with Erma. The teacher said that in school, Alfonso was claiming to be a girl and that when he spoke or wrote, he would refer to himself using feminine word forms. The teacher would try to correct Alfonso’s feminine word forms, pointing out that he was a boy. Alfonso then retorted:

“No, I am a girl.” (6)

Alfonso was apparently remembering the feminine word forms that he used when he was Angelina, which led to his confusion regarding his own gender. He stopped using feminine word forms by the age of seven.

6. One day, when Alfonso came home from school, he spontaneously took a drinking glass and put it inside a stocking. He then took a needle and pretended that he was repairing the stocking. While doing so, Alfonso said:

“Oh, I have not done this for such a long time.” (7)

Erma then recalled that when they lived in Loures, one of Angelina’s aunts was a seamstress who would place a drinking glass inside a stocking and then mend the stocking. The glass made it easier to see the knitting of the stocking.

Angelina was very fond of this aunt and would visit her at the seamstress shop. At the shop, Angelina would pretend that she was mending stockings in the same way. Again, Erma vouched that no one had told Alfonso about these stocking mending activities that Angelina participated in.

As such, Alfonso unconsciously replicated a behavior of Angelina.

Past Life Memories: Alfonso Finds the Gypsies’ River

Irma did not know what he was talking about. There was no bridge where they lived in Lisbon and she could not remember any bridge with gypsies.

Soon after, Erma took Alfonso on a trip to Loures to visit a relative. Once there, Alfonso and other children left the house to play. When they returned, a playmate said that she was scared because Alfonso had said that he was going to see the bridge and he then crossed the street. Alfonso responded to this concern, telling Erma:

“Yes, I went to see the bridge; but it was quite changed, and there are no gypsies there.” (8)

Erma then asked Alfonso whether this was the bridge that he was talking about before, that he wanted to visit. He replied:

“Yes, Mama. Can you remember the gypsies that used to be there? I wanted to help them wash their clothes.” Alfonso continued, “Now there is big bridge there, completely different from the old one.” (9)

Erma then remembered that when the family lived in Loures, there was no Roman Catholic church in their neighborhood. To attend mass on Sundays, the family had to walk to a church in another community. To get there, they had to cross a river using a crude rock bridge. Erma, Angelina and the family would cross this rock bridge to go to church.

Alfonso had never seen this crude rock bridge in his contemporary lifetime, as by the time he was born, the new bridge had been built, replacing the stone bridge. As such, Alfonso was remembering scenes from Angelina’s lifetime.

8. Alfonso accurately described of the death of a small white dog with black spots that the Lopes family had when Angelina was alive.

Erma confirmed that the family did have a small white dog with black spots, as Alfonso had described. This dog had died 2 months before Angelina’s died. Erma vouched that no one had told Alfonso about this dog. As such, the memory of the dog represents a scene from Alfonso’s past lifetime as Angelina.

Alfonso’s Past Life Memories: As Vivid as in Contemporary Lifetime

IISISReincarnationResearchCarsIn 1997, when Alfonso was 35 years old, he told Ian Stevenson that his memories of the wooden toy horse, the river with the rock bridge with woman washing clothes in the river, and the death of the white dog with white spots were so vivid that it seemed that these memories were from his own childhood, rather than from a past lifetime.

Alfonso wasn’t born when the events described occurred. As such, these vivid memories were from Alfonso’s past lifetime as Angelina.

This is reminiscent of the reincarnation case of Carroll Beckwith | Robert Snow, in which Snow stated that his past life memories were more real than waking consciousness.

Phobia of Cars from a Past Lifetime

Alfonso developed a phobia of vehicles, a reflection of Angelina’s lifetime in which she was struck by a car, which led to her death. For some reason, Alfonso’s phobia did not manifest until Alfonso was 16 years of age.

Same Family Reincarnation: Angelina Lopes reincarnated into her the same family.

Change in Gender: As a child, Angelina told her mother that she wished she was a boy. Reincarnation research indicates that gender changes in only 5-10 percent of cases. It appears that the soul has a preferred gender and in this case, it appears that the soul of Angelina prefers male incarnations. When she reincarnated, she did incarnate as a boy in the persona of Alfonso.

Phobia from a Past lifetime: Angelina died when an automobile struck and killed her. Alfonso developed a phobia of vehicles.

Soul Plan & Spirit Being Guidance: When Erma was distraught over Angelina’s death, she visited a Rosicrucian mystic or psychic named Francisco Marques Rodrigues. Francisco predicted that Angelina would be reincarnated as her child. Further, he told her that Angelina may be reborn as a boy. His predictions came true. Jenny was able to speak by the time she was one year old. When she was two, Jenny made statements about a previous lifetime. She was being fed by her grandmother, whose name was Mary Gordon. With her mother, Margaret, sitting nearby, Jenny said to her grandmother:

“Do you remember when I used to feed you, Grannie?” (1)

Let us let Ian Stevenson, MD, describe what happened next:

“Apparently, by association, Jenny then mentioned a hill called The Lump at Portree. She spoke about a house there, which had a little pier of its own. She referred to some steps which provided a shorter way of reaching the house by going over the hill, rather than using the road that went around the The Lump. She talked about ‘nice little dogs’ that she had had. (The McLeods had no dogs of their own, large or small.}” (2)

Her mother, Margaret, related that Jenny then became sleepy, as she had just finished her lunch. Due to her drowsiness, Jenny stopped talking and she never spoke about this past lifetime again.

Validation of Jenny’s Past Life Memories

The McLeods told their minister, Reverend H.M.S Muir, about Jenny’s statements, who wrote a summary of the case. The summary was sent to a colleague of Ian Stevenson in Edinburgh, who forwarded the summary to Stevenson.

Margaret McLeod told the researchers that Jenny’s statements corresponded to the life of Bessie Gordon, Jenny’s maternal great-grandmother.

Bessie was born in 1865 in Portree of the Isle of Skye, where she lived her entire life. She lived near the sea and indeed, she had a house with a pier, which was the only pier in the area. Her house was also next to a hill called The Lump, which is pictured above.

There were steps or stepping-stones on this hill, which provided a shortcut to reaching the nearby town of Seafield. This shortcut could be used instead of walking around the Lump.

Of interest, Bessie raised West Highland Terriers. Recall that Jenny made a statement about the “nice little dogs” that she had.

Bessie died at the age of 83, in 1948. As Jenny was born in 1949, Bessie reincarnated only one year after her death.

Principles of Reincarnation & Understanding Past Lives

Physical Resemblance: Margaret, Jenny’s mother, thought that Jenny resembled her grandmother, Bessie, in build or overall physique. Margaret noted that Bessie and Jenny’s builds were very unique relative to other family members. There was no mention of whether a facial resemblance existed. Of course, the resemblance in build could be due to genetic factors, as this represents a case of same family reincarnation.

Innate Talent: Margaret noted that Jenny was similar to Bessie “in their ways of speaking and her manner of going about things.” (3)

In addition, Jenny and Bessie both enjoyed home-made soup and highland dancing, though Margaret admitted that her other daughters had these traits also.

More significantly, Jenny and Bessie were unique from other family members in that they both loved to read and they both had good singing voices. As such, it appears that a talent for singing was brought across from one incarnation to another.

The Murder of Sehide Suzulmus

It is a dramatic case, as a couple that was murdered together appear to have reincarnated in close proximity of one another. They were then able to meet and embrace one another as children. These cases demonstrate how souls can plan incarnations to ensure that those who loved one another in prior incarnations can be reunited in subsequent lifetimes through reincarnation.

Abit Suzulmus, Sehide’s husband, was murdered after an employee at his farm told him that an animal was lame. It was nighttime and in the dark, Abit went with the employee to the stable to look at the animal. When Abit leaned over to examine the animal, someone struck Abit over the head with a heavy metal bar or hammer, which killed him.

When Abit didn’t return to the house, Sehide, his wife, went to the stable to see what was delaying him. She too was killed by a blow to the head. Similarly, their two children, Zihni and Ismet, were also killed that night.

The Reincarnation of Sehide Suzulmus

Cevriye Bayri was born on October 1, 1958, in Adana, Turkey, just shy of two years after the death of Sehide Suzulmus. Her father was Kerim Bayri, who was a tinsmith, and her mother was named Cemile.

Soul Plan: An Announcing Dream

After Cevriye was born, Kerim, her father, had a dream in which Abit Suzulmus appeared to him. Recall that Abit is the one who was murdered along with his wife, Sehide. As the murder of Abit was well publicized in Adana, Kerim knew who Abit was. In the dream, Abit told Kerim that he was sending him a gift that he should look after. When Kerim asked what the gift was, Abit replied:

“The one who has come with you.” (1)

This dream occurred when Abit Suzulmus had already reincarnated as Ismail Altinkilic, who was about a year old at the time Kerim had his dream. As such, this dream indicates that the soul can function independently of its physical incarnations, which is further discussed in the section entitled Soul Evolution.

As soon as Cevriye could speak, she tried to communicate something that was unclear, but as her verbal skills improved, the words she was trying to say evolved into the following statement:

As a small child, Cevriye had a pronounced phobia of the dark. This phobia persisted at least to when she was 15 years old. As one example, when the electricity at their home when out, Cevriye began crying and ran to her mother, exclaiming:

“Ramazan is going to kill me.” (3)

She said that she had gone in search of her husband, who had been killed by Ramazan. She said that she then too was killed by Ramazan by a hammer. Cevriye said that she had been killed in the dark and that she was pregnant at the time of her death.

Cevriye told her parents that her name had been Sehide and that her husband’s name was Abit Suzulmus.

All of these details were historically correct, as recounted in the case of Abit Suzulmus | Ismail Altinkilic. In addition, Cevriye said that as Sehide, she gave birth to her child after her death. Indeed, Sehide Suzulmus was going into labor at the time of her murder, but it was not publicly known that she had delivered after her death. As part of the investigation of the murders, Sehide’s body had been exhumed from her tomb and it was found that indeed, her unborn baby had been partially extruded from Sehide’s body.

A skeptic could claim that Cevriye’s knowledge of the murder of Sehide could have come from coaching by her father, Kerim, as the murders were well publicized and Kerim did have the announcing dream that involved Abit. The recognitions made by Cevriye that are provided below, though, could not have involved coaching, as they were spontaneous events.

Past Life Memories: Cevriye’s Recognition of Past Life Relatives and Friends

She told him that on the day that she, as Sehide, had been murdered, she had given the ice cream seller, who was poor, some food to eat. The ice cream seller confirmed that Sehide did give him food on the same day that she was murdered.

When Cevriye was less than three years of age, she was introduced to Hatice, the second wife of Abit Suzulmus. Cevriye was told that this person was a friend or partner in her past incarnation, without being given Hatice’s name. Cerviye spontaneously identified Hatice by name.

Cevriye recognized Fehime, her sister from her past incarnation as Sehide Suzulmus. In addition, Cevriye was able to identify Gulserne, who was Sehide’s surviving daughter. When they met, Cevriye named Sehide’s children and when Gulserne asked who she was, Cevriye responded, “Gulserne.” (4)

Cevriye was taken to the Suzulmus home by her mother, Cemile, and was asked if she could identify a young woman who was referred to as “this girl.” Cevriye was given no other clues, but she spontaneously identified the girl as Hikmet, another surviving daughter of Abit and Sehide Suzulmus. Cevriye then ran to Hikmet, hugged her and then related to her how she had been killed as Sehide.

When Cevriye was introduced to Ziki, the surviving son of Abit and Sehide, she embraced him and started to cry. She then stated, “This is my son.” Cevriye asked Ziki if Hattice, the second wife of Abit, was taking good care of him. (5)

Cemile, Ceviye’s mother, obtained a photo from the Suzulmus family of Abit and Sehide. When Ceviye was between two and three years old, Cemile showed the photo to Ceviye and asked who the people were in the picture. Ceviye replied:n“This is my photograph and my husband.” (6)

When Cevriye was five years of age and she and her mother were passing a restaurant, Cevriye recognized her past life friend, Gullu, inside the restaurant. Her mother, Cemile, did not know Gullu. Still, they went inside the restaurant and Cevriye correctly identified the woman as Gullu. Gullu was about 70 years old at the time and she denied any familiarity with Cevriye or her family. As such, this represents an accurate past life memory.

Semiha Akdi was a girl employed by Abit and Sehide. Sehide wanted Semiha to marry their other employee Ramazan, but Ramazan ruined this plan by murdering Abit and Sehide.

Nadir Mirel was a friend of Sehide Suzulmus. When she heard of Cevriye’s memories of being Sehide, she visited the young girl with two friends. As a test, Nadir asked Cevriye:

“Who was your tailor?” (8)

Cevriye’s mother, Cemile, did not know the answer to this question, yet Cevriye pointed to one of the other women who came with Nadir, whose name was Nadir Midel. While pointing at Nadir, Cevriye stated, “There is my tailor.” (9) Cevriye was correct; Nadir was the tailor of Sehide Suzulmus.

Past Life Emotions: Cevriye’s Attachment to Sehide, her Past Life Name

Cevriye had an attachment to the name, Sehide. She asked her mother many times to change her name to Sehide. This phenomenon, of a person wanting to change their name to that of a past life identity, also occurred in the case of Abit Suzulmus | Ismail Altinkilic, as well as the case of Francesco Foscari | Wayne Peterson.

Past Life Love: Cevriye | Sehide and Abit | Ismail are Reunited through Reincarnation

Ismail had memories since childhood of being Abit Suzulmus, the husband of Sehide, who was murdered with her. A meeting between Cevriye and Ismail was arranged when Cevriye was four years of age and Ismail was about five.

According to Ismail’s father, when Cevriye and Ismail first met, they ran to each other, hugged and kissed. Cevirye’s mother also related that Ismail hugged Cevirye.

Cevirye’s account of the meeting, as related to Ian Stevenson, was that Ismail held and caressed her hand, that they exchanged gifts and that they then related to each other the memories of how they were murdered.

Ismail asked Cevirye why she did not come to his aid when he cried out for help at the time of his murder. Cevirye posed the same question to Ismail. Ismail replied that he was “near his ox.” (10)

Up until five or six years of age, Cevirye kept referring to Abit Suzulmus as “my husband.” Ian Stevenson noted that she spoke in the present tense, as if Abit was still her husband in contemporary times. (11)

Ismail consistently stated that he wanted to marry Cevirye, at least through his last meeting with Ian Stevenson, which occurred in 1973. At the time of this meeting with Stevenson, Ismail was 16 year of age when he reported his continuing love for Cevirye.

Past Life Emotions, Past Life Love Story & Past Life Children

“Who knows whether my children are hungry?” (12)

Cevirye’s brother said that when Cevirye was young, she often asked to be taken to where Sehide’s children were staying. Eventually, Cevirye was taken to the home of Hatice Suzulmus, the first and surviving wife of Abit Suzulmus. Hatice was raising the surviving children of Abit and Sehide Suzulmus.

When Cevirye asked to see Zeki, a son of Abit and Sehide, Hatice was uncooperative. Cevirye was persistent and found Zeki sleeping upstairs, where she caressed him lovingly.

Cevirye continued to show attachment to the children of Abit and Sehide at least until she was 14 years of age. When Ziki, her son from her past incarnation, was married, Cevirye and was very upset that she was not invited.

Cevirye continued to visit Ziki and Hikmet, the surviving children of Abit and Sehide, through 1973, when Cevirye was 15 years of age.

Similarly, when Ismail was young, he was very concerned with Abit’s children and wished to take care of them. Ismail insisted that his father take food to the children of Abit and Sehide. These episodes are detailed in the case of Abit Suzulmus | Ismail Altinkilic.

Ian Stevenson last met with Cevirye on her birthday, on October 1, 1967, when she was 15 years old. Stevenson was surprised by the charming young woman who met him at the door, as he had not seen her for a few years.

Cevirye related to Ian Stevenson that she would sometimes meet Ismail on the street, but that she found it embarrassing to speak to him. She still continued, though, to visit Sehide’s children, Ziki and Hikmet, from time to time.

Principles of Reincarnation & Understanding Past Lives

Spirit Being Involvement: There are two instances in this case which involve spirit beings.

First, there was the dream that Kerim, the father of Cevirye, had just after she was born. In this dream, Abit Suzulmus appeared to him and told Kerim that he was sending him a gift that he should look after. Abit was referring to Cevirye, who was Abit’s wife, Sehide, in their prior incarnations.

Recall that Abit had already reincarnated as Ismail Altinkilic and that Ismail was about a year old when this dream occurred. This demonstrates how the soul can function independently of its physical incarnations, as the soul of Abit | Ismail was able to communicate to Kerim in a dream while Ismail was incarnate. This ability of the soul to function independently of its physical incarnations is further discussed in the section entitled, Soul Evolution.

A second example of spirit beings involves Cevriye’s knowledge that Sehide’s baby was born after she was murdered. As Sehide had been killed, she must have observed from the spirit world what happened after her death. Recall that the criminal investigation of the murder involved opening Sehide’s tomb to see if she was pregnant when she was killed. When the tomb was opened, it was found that she was indeed pregnant and that the child was partially extruded from her womb.

Past Life Phobia: As a small child, Cevriye had a pronounced phobia of the dark, which persisted at least to when she was 15 years old. As one example, when the electricity at their home went out and the house became dark, Cevriye began crying and ran to her mother, exclaiming:

“Ramazan is going to kill me.” (13)

Recall that in her past lifetime as Sehide, she was murdered by Ramazan in the dark when she went to see what was delaying her husband, Abit, when he went to the stable to check on a lame animal.

Family Relationships Reunited through Reincarnation: Abit and Sehide Suzulmuz were murdered together in Adana, Turkey, on January 31, 1957. Shortly thereafter, they reincarnated together in Adana.

Abit reincarnated on September 30, 1957 as Ismail Altinkilic, while Sehide reincarnated as Cevriye Bayri on October 1, 1958. As such, both reincarnated less than two years after their murders.

When Cevriye’s family learned of Ismail’s memories of being Abit, they arranged a meeting for the children, which occurred when Ismail was about five and Cevriye was four years of age. According to Ismail’s father, when Cevriye and Ismail first met, they ran to each other, hugged and kissed. Cevirye’s mother also related that Ismail hugged Cevirye.

Cevirye’s account of the meeting, as related to Ian Stevenson, was that Ismail held and caressed her hand, that they exchanged gifts and that they then related to each other the memories of how they were murdered.

Ismail continued to declare his love and intention to marry Cevirye at least until he was 16 years of age. In contrast, at the same time, when Cevirye was 15 years of age, she related to Ian Stevenson that when they would spontaneously meet on the street, she was embarrassed to speak to Ismail of their past lifetimes together.

Though we don’t know if Cevirye and Ismail were ever able to renew a romance in a story book fashion, we do know that Abit and Sehide were able to meet again and renew relationships though reincarnation, as Ismail and Cevirye.

The Murder of a Farmer and his Pregnant Wife

iisis4pastliferegressiontherapyturkeyoxenAbit Suzulmus lived in Adana, Turkey, in the Bey district. His exact date of birth is unknown, but it is thought that he was born around 1912. He grew fruits and vegetables and he did well enough to own two houses. He was also able to hire others to help him work his land.

Abit married twice. His first wife, Hatice, did not bear children, so he took a second wife, Sehide, who had five children with him. Abit had his two wives live separately in his two houses. The houses were 350 meters apart.

On January 31, 1957, Abit, at his home where Sehide lived, was told by one of his employees that one of his farm animals was sick. Sehide was nine months pregnant at the time and was starting to go into labor. Abit went with the employee to the stable to tend to the animal. As Abit leaned down to examine the animal, he was struck in the head with a heavy hammer. Abit was killed by this blow to the head when he was about 45 years old.

Mehmet Altinkilc and his wife, Nebihe, lived in the Midik section of Adana, Turkey. A neighbor, Fatma Tanrisven, who lived a few hundred meters or yards from the Altinkilc family, had a dream that involved the Altinkilcs.

Three men walking along the road outside the Altinkilc home called out to Abit and asked him to come out of the house. Abit replied:

“No, I am going to stay here, I will not come back.” (1)

Fatma told her husband, Mahmut, about the dream and the next day he went to the home of Mehmet Altinkilc to share the dream with him. It turned out that Nebihe, Mehmet’s wife, was pregnant. Neither Fatma or Mahmut knew that Nebihe was expecting a child.

Once Mahmut learned that Nebihe was pregnant, he interpreted his wife’s dream to mean that Nebihe’s child would be a boy and that he would be Abit Suzulmus reincarnated. Mahmut told Mehmet and Nebihe Altinkilc about his wife’s dream and his prediction that Abit would be born to them.

Mehmet knew who Abit Suzulmus was, not only from the publicity that resulted from the murders, but also because Mehmet and Abit had some business dealings in the past. To Mehmet, though, Abit was just an acquaintance, not a friend. During the investigation of this reincarnation case, Mehmet stated that he did not know personal details of Abit’s life. For example, Mehmet stated that he did not know the names of Abit’s children or other family members.

Validation of Ismail Altinkilic’s Past Life Memories

Nebihe Altinkilic did have a son who was born on September 30, 1957, nine months after Abit Suzulmus was murdered. Mehmet and Nebihe named him Ismail. When he was one and a half years old, just after he started talking and walking, Ismail started to speak about his past lifetime as Abit Suzulmus.

Before Ismail’s many past life memories are shared, let me explain that Ian Stevenson methodically validated these statements as being historically correct. In his book, Cases of the Reincarnation Type: Lebanon and Turkey, Stevenson presents an extensive, 15 page table in which he identifies which witnesses or other objective sources, such as police records, that were used to validate Ismail’s memories. Past Life Memories: Ismail Speaks of his Life and Murder as Abit Suzulmus

Mehmet, Ismail’s father, related that as soon as Ismail was able to speak fluently, he spoke of his past lifetime as Abit Suzulmus. R. Bayer, who was a colleague of Ian Stevenson, tape-recorded Mehmet’s description of the turn of events. A portion of the transcription is provided below:

“One evening I had come in from work very tired and had stretched out on a sofa. Ismail was sitting beside me and came over and sat on me. Being very tired, I said, in order to get rid of him:

‘Ismail, I am terribly tired. Go away.’

He replied:

‘No, no. I am not Ismail. I am Abit.’

‘Yes, Papa. Yes, yes. Gulseren, Zeki and Hikmet.’

He also said that he was owed debts by various persons, mentioning Saban, Abdurrezzak, and another person of Akkapi [another district of Adana]. He also complained of our poverty, and added the he hoped that debtors would pay up.” (3)

Ismail also described to his father how Abit was murdered. Ismail said that Ramazan had told him that an ox was lame, which is why he, Abit went to the stable.

Ismail explained to his father that as Abit, he had two wives, as his first wife could not bear children. He also said that his wife Sehide was very beautiful. He said that he worked as a vegetable farmer and that in his garden, he had fruit trees, including orange and quince trees.

Ismail said that as Abit he had cows and that one cow was named “Susan.” He said that in his past incarnation he had two horses. In the stable, Ismail said that he had a fodder barrel and that he has placed a bed in the stable. Ian Stevenson was able to verify that all these past life memories were correct.

Geographic Past Life Memory: Ismail finds his Past Life Home

Abit’s family heard about Ismail’s claims and Abit’s surviving wife, Hatice, and his daughter, Gulseren, came to visit him at the home of Mehmet and Nebihe. Ismail developed very strong emotional bonds to them.

When Ismail was three years old, Mehmet decided to see if Ismail could find the home of Abit. Recall that Abit lived in the Bey district of Adana and Mehmet and his family lived in the Midik district. The distance between the Bey and Midik districts is about 2 kilometers or a little over one mile.

Though Abit had two homes, Ismail correctly led the way over a distance of 2 kilometers directly to the house where Abit was murdered, even though Ismail in his contemporary lifetime had never been to Abit’s homes. There, he recognized people that Abit knew and recognized places related to Abit.

This is reminiscent of the Anne Frank | Barbro Karlen case, as Barbro, at 10 years of age, was able to lead her parents from their hotel through the winding streets of Amsterdam directly to the Anne Frank House, though she had never been to Amsterdam before. The Frank | Karlen case also shows that facial features can remain consistent from one lifetime to another, and that religion, nationality and ethnic affiliation can change from one incarnation to another.

Past Life Memories: Uncle Mahmut gets Goose Bumps when Ismail describes their Drinking Parties with Women

He identified one drinking buddy as being Abdurrezzak, which was true. Abdurrezzak Baydar did indeed drink raki with Abit.

He also said that he would drink raki every night with his uncle, whose name was Mahmut Altinkilic. Ismail explained that he, as Abit, and his Uncle Mahmut worked the fruit and vegetable fields together. In addition, they jointly owned a garden and that they would have drinking parties in. Ismail noted that when he and Mahmut would drink, they would snack on sama.

Further, Ismail said that he, as Abit, and Uncle Mahmut would invite women to their drinking parties.

When Mahmut Altinkilic heard Abit describe that they had women over for the parties, he said he developed goose bumps. Mahmut explained that he was sure that no one other than Abit and he knew about the women that they invited to their parties in the garden. It was this very personal secret that Ismail knew, which could not be explained except by Ismail being the reincarnation of Abit, that made Mahmut’s flesh react in this way.

Past Life Memories: Ismail Remembers People Who owed him Money in his Prior Lifetime as Abit

Ismail told his father that at the time that he died as Abit, that several individuals owed him money. He said that two of the people who owed him money were named Abdurezzak and Sabit.

Abdurezzak Baydar admitted that at the time of Abit’s death, he owed Abit 200 Turkish lira and Sabit Devici stated that he owed 200-300 Turkish lira to Abit when he died. Again, Ismail’s memories were correct.

When Sabit Devici learned about Ismail’s claim to be the reincarnation of Abit, Sabit sought him out. Sabit had never met Ismail before and Ismail, in his contemporary incarnation, had never met Sabit. Sabit first met Ismail when Ismail was without his mother, father or others who could have identified Sabit. Sabit asked Ismail who he was and Ismail replied, “Sabit.” (4)

Past Life Memories: Ismail Spontaneously Recognizes his Past Life Friend, Rasit, the Ice Cream Seller

Rasit was impressed with Ismail’s recognition of him as Rasit lived in the Bey district, while Ismail saw him in the Medik district, where he sold ice cream. Rasit didn’t think anyone knew him in the Medik district.

Ismail also referred to Rasit as a “kirve.” This has significance as Abit was a close friend of Rasit and was to serve as the “kirve,” or sponsor, of the circumcision ceremony for Rasit’s son. In calling Rasit a kirve, Ismail appears to have gotten the roles reversed when Abit was alive, but still, he was accurate in identifying Rasit by name and referring to a role that had significance to Rasit and his past life friend, Abit.

Ismail was also able to spontaneously identify Rasit’s son, Ali Tathci. Upon seeing this man, Ismail said:

“That man is called Ali, and I worked with him.” (5)

Ali worked with his father selling ice cream, but he also had worked for Abit in his vegetable and fruit fields.

Past Life Memories: Ismail Recognizes Abit’s Chair and Accurately Admits a Debt

Abit regularly visited a shop owned by brothers whose family name was Kapiciobul. As Abit visited the shop on a daily basis, he complained that there was no chair for him. In response, a chair was brought in specifically for Abit, for him to sit in when he visited the shop.

When the Kapiciobul brothers had heard about Ismail’s claims to be the reincarnation of Abit Suzulmus, they sent word to Ismail’s father to bring him to the shop, so that they could meet him.

“Do I owe you money?” Ismail replied, “No, on the contrary, I owe you 100 lira.” (6)

Ismail’s statement was correct. Abit had owed the Kapiciobul brothers 100 lira.

Ismail’s Attachment to his Past Life Identity of Abit Suzulmus

As a child, Ismail insisted that his family call him Abit. When he was six years old and it was time to enroll in school, he demanded that he be registered as Abit Altunkalic, a demand that his father agreed to.

When he was seven years old, at the time when Ian Stevenson first met him, Ismail still would not respond to anyone unless he was addressed as Abit. Even in adulthood, Ismail was attached to the name and when Ian Stevenson met Ismail in 1973, when he was 16 years old, he showed Stevenson his identity card, in which his first name was listed as Abit.

Ismail’s attachment to the name Abit is reminiscent of the case of Francesco Foscari | Wayne Peterson. As a young child, Wayne refused to respond to his name Wayne. When his parents asked what he wanted to be called, he declared that his name was Francesco Foscari, though he had no idea where he got that name from. As an adolescent, Wayne even considered to legally change his name to Francesco Foscari. It took several decades for Wayne to realize that in a past lifetime, he was Francesco Foscari.

Past Life Emotions: Ismail’s Love for the Family of Abit Suzulmus

Ian Stevenson noted that Ismail had an intense and enduring attachment to Abit’s family. When Ismail saw a good cut of meat in his father’s butcher shop, he asked his father to prepare it and sent it to Abit’s children. When his father refused, Ismail wept for hours and would not eat. His father finally gave in and took the meat to the Suzulmus family. Ismail also asked his father to send watermelons to Abit’s family, which his father also resisted.

In 1964, when Ismail learned of the death of Abit’s mother, he cried and went to bed without dinner. When Abit’s son, Zeki, joined the military and left Adana, Ismail was upset as he was not informed or consulted in the matter.

Once, when Ismail was visiting the Suzulmus home, Abit’s daughter, Hekmit, was holding Ismail’s hand. He then told Hekmit that she was his daughter and that the house and garden belonged
to him.

During one period of his life, Ismail demanded to live with the Suzulmus family. Though this was not allowed, Ismail visited the Suzulmus family often and greatly enjoyed their time together. This is reminiscent of the Rashid Khaddege | Daniel Jurdi case, as Daniel would visit his past life family monthly. The Khaddege family even kept a cot or small bed for Daniel, so that he could sleep over on his visits.

As noted before, Ismail recalled how he, as Abit, enjoyed drinking raki with his friends. As a child, Ismail was discovered to secretly drink raki.

When, after a long series of legal delays, Ramazan, the murderer of Abit was finally hanged, Ismail’s parents observed that he was very pleased and clapped his hands in joy.

Past Life Love & Emotions: Abit and Sehide are Reunited through Reincarnation

Recall that Sehide was Abit’s wife, who was murdered at the same time that Abit was killed. A young woman named Cevriye Bayri came forward and claimed to have memories of being Sehide.

Principles of Reincarnation & Understanding Past Lives

Ian Stevenson pointed out that the Abit Suzulmus | Ismail Altunkalic case is one of the best documented of all Turkish reincarnation cases. This reincarnation case demonstrates the following features:

Soul Plan & Spirit Being Involvement: In an announcing dream, a neighbor of the Altunkalic family had a dream that was interpreted to mean that Abit Suzulmus would be reincarnated as the son of Nebihe Altunakalic, which appears to have indeed occurred. As such, it appears that the soul of Abit was able to communicate that he would be reborn nearby.

Geographic Past Life Memory: Ismail was able to lead his father directly to the home of Abit Suzulmus, where Abit and his wife, Sehide, were murdered. Ismail was only three years of age at the time that he showed the way to Abit’s home and he had not been shown the way before.

Helmut was a timber merchant, ship-broker and sawmill operator in his home town of Wilhelmshaven. He purchased timber from various countries, including Norway, Sweden, Russia and America, which was transported by ship. He processed the timber in his sawmill and sold it as lumber.

Helmet Speculates on Timber, Loses his Fortune & Commits Suicide

In 1887, Helmut anticipated that the price of imported lumber would go up due to a proposed tax and he paid a premium price on a large amount of timber from overseas. The tax was never enacted and the price of timber actually fell. This miscalculation resulted in the loss of a great deal of money.

While reviewing his account books and while fully awake, Ruprecht would see himself in a past lifetime. In a tape recorded statement, Ruprecht explained:

“I could see how I looked then. I was wearing a high collar and formal clothing. I had come from a ceremony on a special day. My business was finished. An employee had run off with the money—embezzled it and absconded. So I sat down with the account books and could see that there iisisreincarnationpastlifeevidencesuicide2was no future. It was all over. Then I was in a room by myself and put a bullet into my head at the right temple. You would call these images clairvoyance, but for me, they are memories.”(3)

In another statement, Ruprecht noted how similar the settings were in the past lifetime and his current incarnation during World War II, when the memories emerged:

“The setting of the previous time was similar to the one I was in then. The safe was in a similar location and the account books were also similar.” (4)

Ian Stevenson noted that Ruprecht’s memories were vague at first, but over time, they became clearer and clearer. The memories only occurred when Ruprecht was fully awake and they only occurred when he was in his office during his watch duty. The office setting in Berlin replicated the office setting in his previous lifetime. This similarity appears to have triggered his past life memories.

Past Life Memories: Ruprecht Remembers a Lifetime Involving Shipping & Lumbar in Wilhelmshaven

“Since my earliest years, I have had a distinct impression, with various details that I was in a previous life somehow connected with ship building or shipping and that I shot myself. Further, the man I was seemed to be in an ancient house. In this there was a small room with a chest or kind of safe or filing cabinet in which important papers, account books and probably also some cash were kept. The person I was wore dark clothes of the style of that period, as if he had come from some important session or unusually important event. As for the date of these events—the suicide of the person I was—it has seemed to me that it would have been around 1885.” (5)

Ruprecht also recalled that in this past lifetime, he was involved in a business dealing with wood. Ruprecht started to keep a diary, writing down memories as they surfaced. He was not able to verify his memories until after World War II had ended.

Validation of Ruprecht’s Past Life Memories

Ruprecht remembered that his past lifetime was spent in a small seaport town in Northern Germany. He felt that Wilhelmshaven was the correct place, but he also considered several other towns in Germany on the North Sea.

Ruprecht wrote to municipal authorities of Wilhelmshaven and nine other seaside towns, inquiring whether they knew of a businessman who was involved with shipping of timber, the lumber business and who had shot himself and died in the 1880’s.

In the first letter from Wilhelmshaven, the official wrote that the family name of timber merchant was “Kohl.” Ruprecht knew that this name was slightly off. In a second letter from the official, the family name was corrected to “Kohler” and Ruprecht was provided with the address of the man’s surviving son, Ludwig Kohler. (6)

Relationship Renewed through Reincarnation: Ruprecht Gets a Letter from his Past Life Son, Who Confirms Helmut’s Past Life Memories

On September 17, 1952, Ruprecht wrote to Ludwig Kohler who responded and confirmed that Ruprecht’s past life memories corresponded closely to the life of his father, Helmut Kohler. Ludwig, in a letter to Ruprecht, gave the following testimony:

In it money, account books, and also a cash box and important papers were kept. My father ordinarily wore dark clothing, and when ever he went out he wore a top hat on his head.

He imported wood by ship from Danzing, Konisberg, and Mermel, but in particularly from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia and America. In 1888 he mistakenly believed that a customs duty would increase, and he purchased from abroad an unusually large amount of timber. Unfortunately, this was a faulty speculation, because the price of timber fell and much more than the customs duty rose. He then had difficulty in paying the invoices.

In order to get through the crisis he had arranged for his accountant, who had been his ‘right hand’ and enjoyed his complete trust, to falsify the records of their foreign exchange transactions. The two of them thought that they would extricate themselves when the exchange rate fell. This did not happen. The accountant became afraid that he would be arrested, and he fled to America taking with him a substantial amount of the company’s available funds.

My father now got into a complete panic and shot himself on the Day of Prayer and Repentance. The company had to declare bankruptcy, although this was in fact unnecessary. Even though the buildings, the sawmill, and the lumber on hand were all sold in a forced auction, all the creditors were paid off.” (7)

Relationships Renewed through Reincarnation: Ruprecht Meets Ludwig and Recognizes Other Past Life Sons in Photographs

In October 1956, Ruprecht traveled to Wilhelmshaven for the first time, where he met Ludwig Kohler. Wilhemshaven is 370 kilometer or 230 miles from Berlin. As noted, Ruprecht had never been to Wilhemshaven before. Ludwig was 12 years old when his father, Helmut, committed suicide. Now, as an adult, Ludwig would meet the proposed reincarnation of his father.

Ruprecht said that he recognized certain buildings, such as the Town Hall, in Wilhelmshaven. He stated that when Ludwig showed him photos of the Kohler children, who were pictured among a large group of schoolchildren, he was able to recognize Helmut’s other sons from the crowd, though he was not able to recognize his past life daughters.

In sum, Ruprecht was able to validate his past life memories by contacting his past life son, Ludwig Kohler. Ian Stevenson considered the case of Helmut Kohler | Ruprecht Schultz as one of the strongest reincarnation cases he had studied. Stevenson was particularly impressed with Ruprecht’s validated memories involving a past life involving a shipping and timber business in the remote town of Wilhelmshaven, which ended in suicide. Stevenson felt this combination of memories was far too unusual to occur by chance or coincidence.

The Karma of Suicide

Is there a penalty for committing suicide? I asked this question in a session with Kevin Ryerson, who channels a spirit being named Ahtun Re who I have worked with since 2001. Ahtun Re is the most intelligent being I have ever interacted with. In sum, the consequence of suicide is that one will have to reincarnate and face the same type of situation that led to the suicide. In other words, one cannot escape a difficult situation through suicide, for one will have to face the same situation in a future lifetime.

Past Life Karma: Rupecht Loses his Fortune, Replicating the Circumstances of Helmut’s Suicide

Reflect that Helmut became wealthy in dealing with timber imports and the processing of lumber. When his financial situation took a downturn and he faced bankruptcy, he committed suicide to escape the consequences of his loss of fortune.

Helmut then reincarnated as Ruprecht Schultz, who as a youth demonstrated natural skill as an entrepreneur. As such, Ruprecht appears to have retained business talent from his past lifetime as Helmut. Ruprecht, like Helmut, became very wealthy. He also became involved in civic duties. Helmet appears to have been a city official who dressed in formal attire for the Day of Repentance and Prayer. Ruprecht became a member of his local Chamber of Commerce and a representative to the Berlin municipal council. Life patterns are observed to repeat.

Like Helmut, Ruprecht also lost all his wealth, though for Ruprecht, it was not due to bad business decisions. Quite the opposite, Ruprecht noted that in his contemporary lifetime, he had been a very conservative investor who avoided risk, which he attributed to the losses incurred in his lifetime as Helmut. Instead, the cause of Ruprecht’s lost fortune was the destruction of Berlin during World War II. The division of Berlin into East and West sides after the war caused him further financial loss.

Ruprecht retired from business when he was 68 years old and moved with his wife from Berlin to Frankfurt, where he died at the age of 80 in 1967.

If Evidence Indicates Reincarnation is Real, is Suicide a Viable Option?

IISISReincarnationPastLifeEvidenceSuicideCloudsThough everyone has to make their own decisions, it is recommended that suicide not be considered an option for those in difficult circumstances for several reasons:

1. First of all, one never knows when life circumstances will change. Recall that Ludwig, Helmut’s son, noted that his father’s suicide was unnecessary, as when Helmut’s business assets were sold in the forced auction, all creditors were paid. Helmut, it appears, underestimated the worth of his assets. Helmut could have lived out his life and enjoyed seeing his children grow, though his lifestyle would have been less luxurious.

In my medical career, I have witnessed several cases in which people were acutely suicidal due to adverse life events. Within a few years, though, their situations had changed considerably and they found themselves living very happy lives. Anyone with suicidal thoughts should seek psychiatric help. Psychotherapy and antidepressant medication can be very effective and help people make it through periods of depression.

2. Suicide is not an escape, as one will need to return to deal with the same situation, as demonstrated in the reincarnation case of Helmut Kohler | Ruprecht Schultz. Suicide does not lead to eternal damnation, as some religions teach. Rather, suicide will make the soul face the same lesson so that a more adaptive and positive decisions can be made.

3. Suicide causes emotional trauma to loved ones who are left behind. In addition to experiencing grief due to the loss of their loved one, other emotions that can be felt are guilt and confusion, as the surviving loved ones wonder if they could have done more to prevent the suicide. There are karmic consequences to causing emotional pain to others. Pain caused in others may need to be experienced by the suicide victim in a future incarnation.

Principles of Reincarnation & Understanding Past Lives

This reincarnation case has several interesting features:

Geographic Past Life Memory: We have defined geographic memory as past life memories or emotions that are stimulated by visiting a past life location. In this case, it was not a visit to a past life physical location, rather, the replication of a past life scenario which stimulated memories.

Recall that when Ruprecht would go to his safe in the dark hallway to look at his account books, he had the thought that he had been in this situation before. Later, as he returned to the hallway and retrieved the account books from the safe, memories started to surface, which became clearer and clearer.

The stimulus for Ruprecht’s memories was being in the same setting, a dark office with an old safe and reviewing business account books, which replicated the setting of Helmut’s suicide.

Relationships Renewed through Reincarnation: After committing suicide, Helmut reincarnated as Ruprecht and was reunited with Ludwig Kohler, Helmut’s surviving son. Indeed, it was through Ludwig that Ruprecht was able to validate his past life memories.

Split Incarnation or Parallel Lives: Helmut died on November 23, 1887, while Ruprecht was born on October 19, 1887, five weeks before Helmut died. As such, this represents a case of split incarnation, where a soul animates more than one human body at a time. Consider that Ruprecht was in the womb for 8 months while Helmut was still alive.

As will be discussed in the section entitled, Soul Evolution, it is believed that the soul is involved with the development of the fetus from the time of conception. If this is true, the soul of Helmut Kohler was involved in developing a new incarnation as Ruprecht Schultz while it was still animating the body of Helmut. Why would it do so?

In general, the soul uses split incarnation to more effectively develop or accomplish goals. For example, if a soul is involved in a project to help the world evolve, the soul may plant several incarnations of itself in different parts of the world.

The soul can also be aware of patterns of behavior, including suicide, and anticipate that an incarnation may be cut short. Consider that in the reincarnation case of Paul Gauguin | Peter Teekamp, Paul had an unsuccessful suicide attempt, as did Peter in contemporary times.

Though we cannot know for sure, in the case of Helmut, his soul may have foreseen that a suicide might occur. His soul then started the process of another incarnation as Ruprecht, prior to Helmut’s death, to continue its evolution.

Reincarnation & Innate Talent-Past Life Ability: Ruprecht demonstrated natural talent as an entrepreneur and businessman at the age of 18, becoming wealthy in a short period of time. It appears that Ruprecht was drawing upon business abilities developed in his prior incarnation as Helmut.

The Life of Abdulkerim Hadduroglu & Death in a Minibus Crash

Another village in the area is Karaali, which lies 8 kilometers south of Bedirge. All these locations are part of the southernmost Turkish province of Hatay.

Abdulkerim was a farmer and his land was along a highway. Abdulkerim married a woman named Surevya, who was from Arsus, with whom he had three children. She was pregnant again at the time that Abdulkerim died.

Abdulkerim was a Muslim who observed the month long fast of Ramadan, which also requires abstinence from alcohol. Ramadan is followed by the three day holiday of Seker Bayram, which some Muslims celebrate with indulgence in alcohol. On February 26, 1963, Abdulkerim celebrated Seker Bayram in Antakya with friends by drinking raki, an alcoholic beverage made in Turkey.

After Ramadam, Abdulkerim Drinks Raki

The group, consisting of Abdulkerim, Suphi Elmas, Huseyin Yenoicak and Abdulgani Kizildag, got into a Fiat minibus with Cevri at the wheel. Two of the drinking companions, Hasan Bereket and Remzi Simsek stayed behind.

Abdulgani Kizildag asked to be taken back to the gasoline station where he worked. After they dropped him off, the group headed towards Bedirge. Just as the minivan approached the bridge at Karaali, a truck came from the other direction with its high beam lights on. The lights blinded Cevri who went off the edge of the road, striking the wall of the bridge. The minibus spun around and stopped on the embankment below the bridge.

Abdulkerim was sitting next to the driver. With the impact of the crash, he was smashed against the frame of the vehicle, the force causing one of his shoes to fly off. Abdulkerim was killed instantly. As noted the date was February 26, 1963. The driver, Cervi, suffered a concussion, was hospitalized for three days and was then transferred to prison. He later went to trial for reckless driving and driving while intoxicated, but was acquitted.

Past Life Memories: Necati Caylak Remembers his Past Life and Death as Abdulkerim Hadduroglu

Necati Caylak as born in 1963 in the village of Karaali, about a month after Abdulkerim died in the crash. His parents were Mikdat Caylak and his wife, Zekiye.

When he was two or three years old, Necati started talking about a past lifetime. His first statement referred to his having owned a field near a highway. He said that he was from Bedirge in his prior incarnation.

Necati then said that he had been killed at the Karaali bridge when the vehicle he was in hit the bridge as he was returning from Antakya to Bedirge. He said that he had been drinking before the accident and that it occurred on a Muslim religious holiday. Necati accurately stated the vehicle he was in was a minibus and that he lost a shoe in the crash.

Past Life Memories: Necati Identifies Past Life Companions in the Minibus

IISIS4PastLifeRegressionTherapyTurkeyvancrashNecati correctly named Cevri and Abdulgani as being in the minibus with him, and that Abdulgani worked in a gas station. He said that the minivan was stolen, which was partially correct, as the minivan was taken without permission of the owners.

Necati identified Remzi as being another friend in the minibus. In actuality, Remzi was part of the group that drank raki on the night of the accident, but Remzi was left behind and did not travel in the minivan. Necati states that Ferrac was another occupant of the minvan, but in reality Ferrac was a part owner of the minivan who was not involved in the accident. Necati did not accurately identify Suphi Elmas and Huseyin Yenoicak as the other occupants of the minivan.

In sum, Necati gave an accurate description of the crash, in that he said it happened in a minivan at the bridge at Karaali and that he lost a shoe in the accident. He also made a number of accurate statements involving occupants of the minibus, namely that he, Cevri and Abdulgani traveled in the minibus before the crash, but he also confused a few names and details regarding the occupants.

Necati’s family had heard about the crash at the Karaali bridge, which only happened a month before Necati was born, but they didn’t know any details regarding those involved in the accident. As such, they could not have supplied Necati will all these details involving the occupants of the minivan.

Past Life Phobia: Necati’s Fear of Crossing the Bridge where Abdulkerim was Killed

IISIS4PastLifeRegressionTherapyTurkeyBridge1When Necati was two to three years old, he and his older brother were walking down the highway when they came to the bridge at Karaali, where Abdulkerim was killed. When Necati saw the bridge, he became extremely anxious and he started to cry.

When asked why he was crying, Necati told his brother that he had been killed in a car accident there. He said that in the crash, he lost one of his shoes. Necati refused to cross the bridge and wanted to find a different way to cross the small river beneath the bridge.

Ian Stevenson noted that Necati’s phobia of the bridge lasted many years, only weakening when he reached ten years of age. Necati also had a phobia of traveling in automobiles, which persisted until he was seven years old.

A similar reaction of experiencing fear at a geographic location was also observed in the case of Rashid Khaddege | Daniel Jurdi, which was also researched by Ian Stevenson, MD. Rashid had died in an automobile crash at a spot called Military Beach, in Lebanon.

As a small child, Daniel was in a car that was being driven by his mother. As they came to the place on the road called Military Beach, little Daniel started to cry uncontrollably. When his mother asked why he was crying, Daniel said that he had been killed at this spot in his prior lifetime. Like Necati, Daniel also had a phobia of cars, though Stevenson said Daniel’s phobia was limited to fast moving vehicles.

The Rashide Khaddege | Daniel Jurdi case is especially important, as it demonstrates that facial features can remain the same from one incarnation to another.

Past Life Memories: Necati Identifies Past Life Family Members

Following his reaction to the bridge a Karaali, Necati gave additional details about his past lifetime. He said that his name had been Abdulkerim. Necati said that his wife was named Sureyya, who came from Arsus. He said that he had sons named Mehmet and Ali, as well as a daughter named Enver, which may have been his attempt to say Munnever. Later on, when he met Abdulkerim’s widow, he correctly told her that their daughter’s name was Munnever.

Necati also said that in his past lifetime his mother was named Fatma, his sister was named Katif and that he had an aunt named Meryem. All these statements were correct.

He said that he had been drinking alcohol at the time of the crash. Necati initially mistakenly said that he had been driving the vehicle that crashed. Later on, he said that Cevri was the one driving the car. Necati added that Cevri should not have been driving, as he had been drinking.

Spirit Being: Abdulkerim Hadduroglu Observes Events after his Death

Sureyya was pregnant at the time that Abdulkerim died and she did give birth to another child after his death. Necati’s knowledge that Sureyya delivered a child after his death implies that the soul of Abdulkerim was able to observe his loved ones from the spirit world. This phenomenon has been observed in many reincarnation cases, which are complied in the section entitled Spirit Being Involvement in Reincarnation Cases.

Past Life Relationships: Necati is Reunited with his Past Life Wife and Family

Sureyya Hadduroglu, the widow of Abdulkerim, heard about Necati’s claim to have died in an auto accident at the Karaali bridge. In the autumn of 1966, three and a half years after the accident, when Necati was about three and a half years old, Sureyya came to visit Necati. She brought with her Abdulkerim’s great uncle, Hasan Sufi Hadduroglu, and two of Abdulkerim’s friends, the brothers Zeyneb and Ahmet Adahi.

Necati replied, “Sureyya.” (2)

Sureyya then had little Necati sit on her knee. She then asked, “Who am I?” (3)

Necati then stated, “You are my wife.” Necati then added that Sureyya was the daughter of his past life uncle, which was correct. (4)

When asked who Hasan Sufi Hadduroglu was, Necati correctly responded that he was a past life paternal uncle. Necati also correctly identified by name Zeyneb and Ahmet Adahi.

Necati’s spontaneous identifications made Sureyya believe that Necati was indeed the reincarnation of her deceased husband, Abdulkerim. Necati’s correct identification of Abdulkerim’s family members brought Sureyya to tears.

Sureyya then said to Necati, referring to him as her husband reborn: “How could you leave Sureyya?” (5)

Necati replied, “But you are Sureyya.” (6)

Past Life Memories: Necati Identifies Past Life Family Members at the home of his Past Life Wife, Sureyya

Sureyya invited Necati and his father to her home to visit her and her children. There, Sureyya’s father-in-law, that is, Abdulkerim Hadduroglu’s father, took Necati in his arms and showed him photographs on the wall and asked, “Who is this?” (7)

Necati looked at the photos and correctly identified himself in his past incarnation, Abdulkerim Hadduroglu, and Abdulkerim’s sister, Katif.

At Sureyya’s home, Necati also spontaneiously identified Meryem Haddurouglu, Abdulkerim’s stepmother. While he was at Surreyya’s home, Mehmet, Abdulkerim’s eldest son, entered the house. When Necati saw him, he immediately and spontaneously said, “This young man is my son.” (8)

Past Life Behavior: Little Necati likes Raki and Identifies his Past Life Drinking Companions in Karaali

IISIS4PastLifeRegressionTherapyTurkeyRakiHasan Bereket, one of the people who was drinking raki with Abdulkerim on the night that he was killed, heard about Necati’s memories of being the reincarnation of Abdulkerim.

Unannounced, he and two others who had been drinking with Abdulkerim on the day he died decided to visit Necati. This occurred in 1968, when Necati was five years old. As they arrived in Karaali, Necati saw them.

Necati spontaneously said to Hasan: “Oh, how are you, Hasan?” (9)

Hasan reported that Necati also recognized the two other drinking companions.

Of interest, Necati also demonstrated a premature interest in raki.

Principles of Reincarnation & Understanding Past Lives

Phobia from a Past Lifetime: Necati demonstrated a great fear of crossing the bridge at Karaali, where Abdulkerim Hadduroglu was killed. This phobia lasted until he was ten years old. In addition, Necati had a fear of traveling in automobiles, which lasted until he was seven.

Spirit Being Involvement: Necati’s knowledge that Sureyya, his past life wife, delivered a child after his death implies that the soul of Abdulkerim was able to observe his loved ones from the spirit would. He was apparently able to observe that his wife’s pregnancy ended in the delivery of a healthy child.

Relationships Renewed through Reincarnation: Necati was reunted with this past life family and wife.

Split Incarnation: Necati was born about a month after Abdulkerim had died. If it is assumed that he soul is involved in the development of the fetus, then Abdulkerim’s soul was animating Necati’s fetus for 8 months of gestation. This phenomenon of a soul being able to inhabit more than one human bodies at a time is termed split incarnation.

The Drowning of Mehet Cosmen

IISIS4PastLifeRegressionTherapyTurkeyHorseMehet Cosmen was born around the year 1898 and worked as a farmer in the village of Kayish, in Turkey. Kayish is 20 kilometers or miles from the town of Adana, Turkey. In about the year 1938, when Mehet was 40 years old or so, Mehet was doing his usual chores around his farm. It was summertime and he was harvesting, thrashing and milling grain. In the process, horses used to perform these tasks became covered with dust and chaff from the grain.

Mehet would go to the River Seyhan to wash the dust from his horse. On one occasion, Mehet took his horse to be washed in an area of the river that is usually shallow. The level of the river, though, had risen and the spot where Mehet took his horse was deeper than expected. The horse became frightened and bit Mehet on the shoulder, who responded by placing a muzzle on the horse.

Mehet’s horse continued to struggle and pulled Mehet into deeper water, where both Mehet and the horse drowned. Mehet could not swim and when his body was discovered, he was found with his arms wrapped around a tree limb, apparently trying to use the limb to float to safety. As noted, it is thought that the year that Mehet drowned was 1938.

Soul Plan, Renewal of Relationships through Reincarnation & Geographic Past Life Memory: Suleyman visits his Past Life Home

IISIS4PastLifeRegressionTherapyTurkeyDeafBoySuleyman Zeytun was born deaf and mute around the year 1938 in the Turkish village of Kayish, the same village that Mehet Cosmen lived and died in. Suleyman’s parents were Ramazan Zeytun and his wife, Bedia. The exact date of Suleyman’s birth is not known.

The Zeytun family actually lived next door to the home of Mehet Cosmen, where his widow and surviving children still lived. Indeed, the house of Mehet Cosmen was only 30 meters from the Zeytun home.

As soon as he could walk, Suleyman would leave his house and go directly to the Cosmen home. Ian Stevenson noted that the Cosmen home was in the opposite direction from the center of the village.

Stevenson conjectured that if a child left the house to meet other people and observe activities in the village, the child would go towards the center of the village, rather than the opposite direction.

Nonetheless, Bedia, his mother, said that Suleyman walked to the Cosmen home “every day.” (1)

Soul Plan in Proximity Reincarnation Case

Please note that Mehmet reincarnating next door to his past life home demonstrates planning on the part of his soul. I term this type of case a Proximity Reincarnation Case, as a soul plans a future lifetime so they reincarnate geographically close to their past life family, so that a reunion with loved ones can be enacted through reincarnation.

Past Life Memories: Suleyman Describes his Past Life Drowning as Mehet Cosman

From the Cosmen’s home, he would point in the direction of the River Seyhan to the spot where Mehet had drowned. Other gestures regarding the drowning, which Ian Stevenson observed, include the following:

1. Ian Stevenson noted that Suleyman would turn his hand in a circle with fingers pointing down to imitate the motion of a horse walking in a circle to move the grinding stone to crush grain.

2. Stevenson observed Suleyman holding his arms and hands parallel to one another to imitate the holding of reins, while leaning back to get the horse to go into the river.

3. Suleyman put his right hand on his shoulder and grasped his shoulder, to show that the horse bit him. Ian Stevenson noted that Suleyman would clinch and show his teeth to imitate the horse biting him.

4. Ian Stevenson then observed Suleyman using his right hand in a circular motion to imitate winding a muzzle cord around the mouth of the horse.

5. Suleyman held both hands in front of him as if holding the reins of the horse. He then would lean to the left and backwards with extended arms to imitate falling off the horse.

6. Ian Stevenson noted that Suleyman then put the fingers of his right hand into his mouth to show that he was swallowing water as he fell from the horse.

8. Suleyman the put his right hand around his throat to show that he was drowning.

At first, Suleyman’s family and the surviving family of Mehut Cosmen were unsure of what Suleyman was trying to communicate. Suleyman’s pointing out of the specific spot in the River Seyhan where Mehut had drowned, along with his pantomime consistent with the events which led to Mehut’s death, allowed the families to understand that Suleyman was conveying that he had been Mehut Cosmen in a past lifetime.

He then tried to take these items back with him to the Zeytun family home. As examples, he tried to walk away with the Cosmen family Koran, claiming it was his, and he tried to lead a buffalo from the Cosmen’s land to the home of the Zeytun family.

Past Life Emotions: Suleyman Gestures his Love for Members of the Cosmen Family

To the brother of Mehet Cosman, whose name was Saban, Suleyman put his two fingers together as a sign of closeness.

To Hatice Cosmen, the widow of Mehet, Suleyman would put his two fingers together as a sign of closeness and then point to his heart, apparently trying to show Hatice that they had been in love with one another.

Past Life Emotions: Little Suleyman’s Protection of Members of the Cosmen Family

After his death, Hatice had to work for other people in the village, doing tasks such as baking bread. When Suleyman saw that Hatice was working for others, he became very upset, started crying and made gestures indicating that her working for others was wrong.

If Hatice would physically discipline her children, Suleyman would object. When Mehmet’s son, Abdullah, got into arguments with others, Suleyman would protest on his behalf.

Suleyman’s attachment to Mehmet’s family, which started at the age of three, continued until he was at least 29 years of age. Though Suleyman and his family eventually moved to the city of Adana, Suleyman would continue to visit the Cosman family in Kayish.

Suleyman would bring presents to Abdullah, Mehmet’s son. Ian Stevenson made the following poignant observation of Suleyman’s attachment to the daughters of Mehmet:

“He attended the weddings of Mehmet Cosmen’s daughters, crying at each like an affectionate father would do.” (2)

Refika, one of Mehmet’s married daughters, related that Suleyman would often visit her family in the Taurus region of Turkey and stay with them. This is reminiscent of the case of Rashid Khaddege | Daniel Jurdi, who visited his past life family on a monthly basis and also stayed with them, sleeping on a cot reserved for him. The Khaddege | Jurdi case also shows that facial features can remain consistent from one lifetime to another.

Suleyman also remained close to Mehet’s widow, Hatice, though their relationship was of a mother and son, rather than a married couple.

Past Life Phobia of Water

In contrast to his schoolmates, he refused to learn to swim in the river. He consistently demonstrated fear at the spot on the River Seyhan where Mehmet Cosmen had drowned.

Ian Stevenson made the point the Suleyman’s deafness serves to strengthen the validity of the case, as Suleyman could not have heard about the death of Mehmet Cosmen from the conversations of others. Suleyman began trying to communicate about his past lifetime as Mehmet long before he was taught to read or write.

Ian Stevenson, in his investigations, was always looking for ways that parents and other involved parties might coach children in testifying about claimed past lives. He was keen to expose any fraud in reincarnation cases.

Ian Stevenson noted that not only did Suleyman’s deafness exclude the possibility of learning about Mehmet’s death from verbal conversations, but it would make it very difficult for anyone to coach Suleyman to falsely claim a past lifetime. Further, Ian Stevenson noted that it would be even more difficult for someone to coach Suleyman to express sentimental emotions towards Mehmet’s family, such crying at the weddings of Mehmet’s daughters.

Was Suleyman’s Deafness and Muteness Karmic in Origin

They concluded that if his disabilities were related to karma, it could not have stemmed from the lifetime of Mehmet Cosmen, as all agreed that Mehmet led a pious life with no misdeeds. If the disabilities were related to karma, they reasoned, it must have due to actions in some other lifetime.

Ian Stevenson noted that Suleyman’s parents, Ramazan and Bedia, were cousins. Since they were of the same biologic family, recessive genes for these disabilities were able to be expressed. As such, Suleyman’s disabilities may have simply have been an issue of genetics.

Whether disabilities or misfortunes are related to karma from prior incarnations is an issue that needs to be better understood and presents a future challenge for those involved in reincarnation research.

Principles of Reincarnation & Understanding Past Lives

This reincarnation case demonstrates the following features:

Soul Plan, Proximity Reincarnation Case: Mehmet Cosmen appears to have reincarnated as Suleyman Zeytun next door to his own past life home in Kayish, Turkey. Though Mehmet did not technically reincarnate into the same family, he reincarnated into a family that gave him direct access to his past life family. I term types of cases “proximity cases,” as the soul reincarnated nearby its last incarnation in order to reconnect with loved ones.

Please note that reincarnating next door to one’s past life home to be reunited with loved ones involves planning by the soul from the spirit realm.

As soon as he could walk, Suleyman made his way to Mehmet’s former home and went on to renew relationships with past life family members. Ian Stevenson noted that Suleyman’s attachment to Mehmet’s children was so strong that at the weddings of Mehmet’s daughters, he wept like any affectionate father would.

As in all same family reincarnation cases, planning by the soul is involved. The soul of Mehmet Cosmen appears to have planned his next incarnation so that he would be born next door to his past life home, so that he could return to his past life family.

Phobia from a Past Incarnation: Mehmet died from drowning and Suleyman demonstrated a fear of water, particularly at the spot in the River Seyhan where Mehmet had drowned.

Change in Religion: It was noted that Suleyman claimed the Koran from the Cosmen home as his own and he tried to take it back to the Zeytun family home. This indicates that Mehmet Cosmen was a Muslim and was we recall, he was noted to be a very pious man.
Ian Stevenson does not specifically indicate what religion Suleyman and his family practiced, but it is safe to say that they developed a belief in reincarnation as Suleyman’s memories of his past lifetime as Mehmet Cosmen became known and validated.

Split Incarnation: Though the exact dates of Mehmet’s drowning and Suleyman’s birth are not known, Ramazan, Suleyman’s father, estimated that the interval between Mehet’s death and Suleyman’s birth was between five to ten days.

Ian Stevenson explained that the villagers of Kayish did not refer to calendars often, but they did remember significant events in their community. The drowning of a member of the village and the birth of a son are events that Ramazan would remember distinctly and as such, Stevenson thought Ramazan’s estimate was likely accurate.

If one assumes that the soul is involved in the development of the fetus and if the interval between Mehmet’s drowning and Suleyman’s birth was only 5-10 days, then the soul of Mehmet inhabited the developing fetus of Suleyman for essentially the entire time that Suleyman was in the womb. This soul was animating both Suleyman, who was in the womb, and Mehmet, who was still alive, for a period of nine months.

This same phenomenon was observed in the very important case of Hanan Monsour | Suzanne Ghanem, as Suzanne was born only 10 days after Hanan died. As such, Hanan was alive almost the entire time that Suzanne was in the womb, indicating that the soul of these two women were animating two bodies at one time. The Monour | Ghanem case also demonstrates that facial features can remain consistent from one lifetime to another.

This phenomenon of a soul inhabiting more than one body at a time has been termed split incarnation. One of the most dramatic examples of split incarnation is found in the very compelling cases involving Penney Peirce. Penney’s soul appears to have inhabited the bodies of two of her past incarnations, those of Alice Cary and Charles Parkhurst, where these two past lives overlapped by 29 years.

Why does the soul incarnate in more than one body at a time? One major reason is to get more accomplished, including working off of karma and participating in projects that are important to the soul. It is also possible that the soul is aware of a destined event, such as an upcoming death, and begins another incarnation to continue its work or to maintain attachments with loved ones
